Isifungo Pre-school is situated in the poor area of Soweto on Sea, where there is a high rate of illiteracy and unemployment. Isifungo began in late 1998 by a community member who was worried about the safety of many young children in her area who were roaming the streets and swimming in a nearby dam unsupervised.
She started the pre-school in an informal structure (shack), with no food, educational resources, toys, tables and chairs. With the help of various donors, the project was eventually able to build a formal structure with two large classrooms, kitchen, office etc. Calabash Trust has worked closely with an overseas Rotary club who donates regular food money and has also supplied new security gates and burglar bars for the windows. Through the continued support of our donors, Calabash Trust has donated mattresses, tables and chairs, educational toys and books to Isifungo. They follow a menu feeding about 108 children twice a day – breakfast and lunch – with 2 snack times.
