Masibulele

Late 2004 Calabash Tours won a joint award in Responsible Travel Tourism Poverty Alleviation. A gentleman, Keith Griffins, from the UK learnt about this achievement and offered to fund a needy Pre-school through his Rotary Club. Masibulele_container

Masibulele was chosen out of other applications by Pre-schools based on its needs and commitment by current teachers. The founder and teacher, Nosipho Dyeku, started the centre in 1997 out of her passion for education and her love for children and her community. Nosipho Dyeku is a qualified pre-school educator. She obtained her qualifications through Early Learning Centre and also attended courses in Bethelsdorp College.

She is assisted by Siphokazi, also trained through Early Learning, who teaches the older children in the school.Nospipho

The centre initially operated from a small shack until Safmarine provided three containers, two of which is being used as classrooms, and one as a kitchen.Siphokazi

Masibulele is located in Soweto on Sea which is one the poorest informal settlements in Port Elizabeth where poverty is ripe. The unemployment rate in this area is as high as 70%. Their objectives are to develop the young children holistically and to simply take care of the children. 3 Informal classrooms (containers) are used, as well as a sick room, although it’s not fully equipped with the necessary facilities. They follow a weekly menu feeding children twice a day – breakfast and lunch. 64 Children are fed twice a day and 15 children come to after school care.
