This project is still being researched to ensure proper implementation and sustainability. Thus more information will follow soon...
We aim to add more vegetables to the current diets, and to ensure a cleaner environment with proper water and waste management systems in place. Pollution is rife in the township areas - mostly due to community members being uninformed of the negative consequences of littering and neglecting the natural environment. We want to start educating the children in the schools, and hope the ideas will flow into the surrounding communities.
Thus far we have contacted various local organisations and individuals to find out what is already being done in the township schools in order to work together instead of in isolation. Through these contacts we were fortunate to be invited to partake in a Biodiversity Seminar celebrating World Environment Week (follow this link for more information http://www.theherald.co.za/article.aspx?id=571280 - Please note the article mentions Calabash Tours instead of Calabash Trust - a common oversight since we work so closely together).
We recently started a food garden at Henry Nginza Primary School as part of our Grassroots Project. Have a look at some pictures under Grassroots.
We are always open to suggestions and new ideas to fathom, so do not hesitate to contact us should you have any opinions and expertise in this field.
