Sports Development

The objective of this project is to develop structured sporting programmes within township schools that use local community skills and initiative to develop sporting excellence. Furthermore, we aim to create an enabling environment for sport and recreation to ensure personal growth and fulfilment, as well as cultural integration and unity.

We are currently researching new sport development models and partnerships with other organisations, as sport has been identified as crucial to the holistic development of children. Thus far we have partnered with another organisation, specialising in soccer development, who are willing to assist and guide us in establishing our own programme.

Seventy children from the 6 Cluster Schools that Calabash Trust support were very lucky to be involved in the Umzingisi Foundation Holiday Camp Programme which was was combined with the Fun Bus Project to create a special holiday programme to cover the school holidays surrounding the World Cup period.

Children from the surrounding informal and semi-formal settlement areas were invited to attend a daily program made up of a mixture of sports activities and life skills through sports activities. A reason for this programme to run during the holiday period was because children are typically vulnerable to ‘at-risk’ behaviors like alcohol and drug abuse, crime or unhealthy behavior as well as child trafficking during this time. Read all about it on the following link: http://www.umzingisi.org/sports-charity-news

We have a very limited budget available for sports development, which is holding us back slightly. Should there be anyone who would be able to contribute in any way, please contact us.
